Shanahan: “I’d also complain about how these victories are really messing up our draft positioning, except that we’ve traded away all our picks for the next twelve years or so.”
After defeating the Baltimore Ravens 31-28 in overtime Sunday, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan lamented the fact that Washington’s current four game winning streak, which has them in contention not just for a wild card spot but for the NFC East crown as well, is seriously interfering with Shanahan’s plan to spend the second half of the 2012 season evaluating talent on the teams roster in preparation for next season.
“It’s a challenge, to be sure,” sighed Shanahan at his Monday press briefing. “These games are an invaluable resource for my staff and I to look at some of our younger players, and to see how they respond in actual game conditions. But as long as we keep winning games, we’re never going to be able to get the extended look at these players that I’d like.”
The Redskins last loss came on Nov. 4th, at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. That defeat dropped Washington to 3-6, seemingly ending their postseason hopes. At that time, Shanahan famously announced that he would spend the rest of the season analyzing and developing the Redskins’ younger players. But the team’s current winning streak has made that process more difficult.
“I just don’t know what we’re going to do,” concluded Shanahan. “We’re never going to develop into a winning football team as long as these stupid wins of ours keep getting in the way.”
